TMNT
Thanks to stumbling across this strange fandom 10+ years ago I have read one of the most fascinating, compelling, and disturbing stories ever: the Walking the Line series by Aubretia Lycania. Summary: Old masks come back to haunt, and it's time for the brothers to let one of the most important things go...time for a wedding, a funeral, a reunion, growing up. Sequel to Of Honor and Innocence and What Cannot Be Fixed.

I just want to repost this analysis from turtleficlibrary on tumblr: This writer's style, structure, symbolism, and overall brilliant complexity leave me in awe.Throughout the whole trilogy, the character traits and psychological issues for each turtle are gradually laid out and have their origins explained, mainly through flashbacks and current events that trigger shameful relapses of what they desperately want to conceal and control. Unfortunately those occurrences just keep piling in intensity and straining the mental tightrope, triggering a final act of desperation from the futility of it all in WTL: Damnation....And I just could not believe it. I was so shocked it went that far. I actually had to reread it to catch all the nuances in the symbolism, and when I finally understood everything and linked all the hints together, I felt extremely dirty. Because then it felt like I had fallen into the black hole of a mind of a complete psychopath, but with EMPATHY for him. Understanding the full weight of why this happens, and seeing the act of selfless sacrifice in return is what broke me. Later I was literally staring wide-eyed at the ceiling every night thinking about the mental complexity and brilliance of the writer for accomplishing that.

excerpts from when I wanted to go to grad school for fan studies
The significance of fandom is its ability to reveal truths about how we confront the realities presented to us and navigate our inner worlds of shame and celebration. Fan labor performs as a conduit for the uncanny, for ugly, high-octane feelings, and opens up parallel worlds of emotions I could understand and process over and over, in the ways I needed, in multiple realms and iterations. Studying fanfiction is an emerging field, offering generous scholarship for its intimacy of intertextual interaction and community. While inextricable from creator-audience-text relationships, framing fanfiction as works of literature contributes to exciting critical models. Beyond a materialization of love for a source media, fanfiction is transformative in that, filtered through social identities and experiences, story elements are changed according to the author’s imagination. I plan to elaborate and complicate the yearning and expressive potential of fandom towards understanding identities and imaginations unfolding at the margins of English study. Current scholarship has traced how problematic desires can be safely explored in fanfiction communities through collective critical awareness and systems of content notes, hinting at how fan practices can potentially build capacity for trauma-informed pedagogy and intentional organizing for inclusion. Reinforced with understandings of fanfiction’s relationship to established literary functions, my research interests are situated at the intersection of composition, embodiment, and affect studies.
